Third-year WR Skyy Moore has been the subject of heavy criticism from the Chiefs Kingdom after a disappointing first couple of years, and now he’s accomplished a feat so unfortunate you’ll have to look twice.
The team was deep in its collective bag of tricks during Monday’s practice, though not every play went as well as the quadruple pass.
Moore apparently attempted a backward pass during a kick return, and in the process was intercepted. On a kick return.
The mistake seems much worse than it probably was in reality. The new starting rules are meant to transform a fundamental part of special teams, so it makes sense to experiment with various strategies.
Moore was attempting a backward pass to the other return specialist, a variation on a common play in leagues that use similar kickoff rules. Obviously it didn’t go as planned, but that’s what practices are for. There are reasons to question Moore’s place on the roster, though this isn’t one of them.
It’s funny, anyway. The mistake would show up on the scoreboard as a lost fumble, not technically an interception, but the highlight (or less highlight) moment would circulate on social media for days if it had actually happened in a real game.
The Chiefs are never shy about experimenting. That’s one of the reasons they’ve won three Super Bowls in the past five years and are the favorites to win another. Not every experiment turns out well, and the intensity of Andy Reid’s training camps allows for some mistakes.
For Moore’s sake, let’s hope this is the last hilarious mistake he makes.
