Bharuch, July 11: A stampede-like situation ensued after around 800 people turned up for walk-in interviews conducted by a company for 40 vacancies in Ankleshwar in Gujarat’s Bharuch district, an official said on Thursday.

Videos have gone viral on social media of a huge queue, with jostling and pushing as candidates tried to stand up on a ramp leading to the entrance of a hotel where the interview was taking place. The railing on the ramp eventually collapsed, causing several candidates to fall, although no one was injured.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday, triggered a verbal duel between the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP.

While the Congress claimed to have showcased the “Gujarat model” (of development that the ruling party talks about), the Bharatiya Janata Party said the former was trying to defame the state through the video.

“As per our information, a company organised walk-in interviews for nearly 40 vacant posts in five different positions. The company booked a room in a hotel in Ankleshwar expecting around 150 candidates. However, 800 turned up and the company officials had to close the door of the interview room to control the crowd, leading to the situation shown in the video,” Bharuch Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda said.

No one was injured in the clash and no complaint has been filed with the police in this regard, Chavda added.

Tagging the video in a post on X, the opposition Congress party said: “Narendra Modi’s Gujarat model. A huge crowd of unemployed people gathered to work at a hotel in Bharuch, Gujarat. The situation reached such a point that the railing of the hotel broke and the Gujarat model was exposed. Narendra Modi is imposing this model of unemployment across the country.”

In response, the BJP, in a post on X, said, “Efforts are being made to defame Gujarat through a viral video of Ankleshwar. The advertisement for the walk-in interview clearly states that they need experienced candidates. This implies that those who attend the interview are already employed elsewhere. Therefore, the idea that these people are jobless is baseless.”

Spreading negativity about Gujarat was a tactic of the Congress, the BJP added.

According to the advertisement, the company was required to fill vacancies for shift manager, plant operator, CDS supervisor, mechanical assembler and ETP executive at its new plant in the Jhagadia industrial area.
