The Baltimore Orioles pulled off an improbable victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday, taking advantage of their opponents’ errors in the ninth inning to score three runs.
Baltimore entered the final half of the inning trailing 5-3 as the Yankees pulled ahead with a three-run inning.
Yankees reliever Clay Holmes entered the game to close the door. Orioles outfielder Kyle Stowers led off the inning with a single, then Colton Cowser grounded into a fielder’s choice, leading to Stowers being forced out at second base.

Baltimore first baseman Ryan O’Hearn walked to put two runners on base, but the batters were left on their final out when Gunner Henderson struck out. Adley Rutschman walked to load the bases and that’s when chaos broke out.
Ryan Mountcastle hit a ground ball to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who dropped the ball and allowed a run to score. Then Cedric Mullins hit a line drive to left fielder Alex Verdugo, who misjudged the play. The ball sailed over Verdugo’s head, and he fell to the ground trying to reach it as two runs scored.
The Orioles won the game, 6-5.

Volpe’s was the Yankees’ only error of the game and their 10th of the season, and it proved to be the most costly as the game could have been over had he fielded it cleanly.

Still, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about how the team has played in recent weeks despite a slump.
“Frankly, it’s no secret that it’s been a tough few weeks for us. As much as we try to keep our balance, and I think we’re doing a good job, we’re still human, and you feel those tough times in the season, and it hurts a little bit more when you wake up and things aren’t going well,” he said, according to NJ.com.
“I think the important thing is to always recognize what you’re going through. We haven’t played very well the last few weeks, but the big picture is that we played pretty well overall, which puts us in a position where we have control of the script going into the second half. It’s in our hands, and that’s a result of how we played in this first half.”

Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander and Henderson both hit home runs in the game. Mullins came in as a pinch hitter in place of Santander and scored the winning run. Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham and first baseman Ben Rice also homered.

With the win, Baltimore moved to 58-38, while New York fell to 58-40.
