An interview with Stormzy in which he reflects on his “painful” split from Maya Jama has resurfaced as the pair announce they have ended their relationship once again.
The rapper and Love Island host released a shocking statement on Wednesday confirming they have split after a year of trying to make things work.
During their 2019-2023 split, Stormzy spoke candidly about the mistakes he had made during their four-year relationship.
Speaking to Louis Theroux, the chart-topper explained what the 2019 breakup was like.‘It was probably the biggest catalyst for my growth as a man.’
“It was just like, okay, you made a mistake and you lost someone you loved, someone you cared about, someone who was special to you.”
“That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, isn’t it? Other than someone dying, that’s the biggest loss you can have.”
Stormzy went on to hint at the mistake he made during his four-year relationship with Maya, adding that he never wanted to feel that way again.
He added: “I did not do what a man should do to fully appreciate love and take care of his woman.”
The couple met in their early 20s: Stormzy was trying to make it as a rapper and Maya was building a career as a TV presenter.
They first split in 2019 amid speculation the rapper had been unfaithful, later confessing in the song Lessons: “I looked at the information and then I thought you’d dig it up.”
Last summer it was revealed that the couple had rekindled their romance after a four-year hiatus.
However, on Wednesday they took to social media to reveal that they had decided to end their relationship for good.

In their joint statement, Maya and Stormzy once again decided to part ways, admitting they had been trying for a year to “make it work.”
They wrote: ‘We’ve been laughing as we write this because we never, ever in a million years thought we would be the couple announcing a break up, but for the sake of clarity and more importantly to allow ourselves the space and grace we both need to be able to navigate this next part of our lives with peace, we thought it would be best,’ Maya and Stormzy told fans in the joint statement.
‘We fell madly in love in 2014, split in 2019, and then spent five years living apart.
‘We decided to give it one last try in August 2023, and we’ve spent the past year doing everything we can to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.
‘We were 21 and 20 when we met, both at the beginning of our careers, and we spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately, so this final attempt required a lot of discovery, relearning and unlearning.
‘We tried it and it didn’t work and that’s okay.
‘We still think the best of each other, we still care for and respect each other, we’re still grateful for the time we’ve spent together, and we’re still friends and will always be friends (so if you see us catching up at The Brits or something, don’t cause a fuss – we’re friends!)
‘We are kindly asking for the grace to allow us both to move on and not be upset about it (we highly doubt this will work, but we are asking kindly anyway).
“We love you guys and thank you for all the love you’ve given us. It’s been beautiful,” they concluded the post, which was signed “Mike and MJ.”
