At the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the event’s organizing committee introduced “Korea” as “North Korea,” sparking a huge controversy.
On the 27th (Korean Standard Time), the IOC issued an apology on the Korean social media account, saying, “We deeply apologize for the mistakes that occurred when introducing the Korean team during the broadcast of the opening ceremony.”
However, he has been criticized again for posting an apology only on Korean accounts, not on official accounts such as the English ones.
In response, Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University said: “The IOC and the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee yesterday sincerely apologized to the Korean side in various ways and vowed to prevent such a thing from happening again.”
Professor Seo said: “Apologies are important for the Korean side, but we must also apologize to viewers around the world who watched the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics together.”
In particular, he sent an email to the IOC, stressing that “an apology should be published on social media accounts in other languages such as English and French at the same time, and that a promise should be made to prevent this from happening again through various media outlets around the world.”
He also said: “First of all, the IOC should remember that this is not the first time the IOC has confused South Korea and North Korea.” It reminded me of the incident when he put the Korean flag on the electronic board while introducing the North Korean players before the football match at the London Olympics.
