1 dead after teen mistook motorist for rival and shot at vehicle in The Woods, police say

An 18-year-old man facing a murder charge told police he shot a passing motorist Thursday morning after he mistook him for someone with whom they were “having an ongoing dispute,” according to a statement. arrest warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Dallas police said no one in the passing vehicle was hit, but a 17-year-old boy who was sitting in the back seat of another nearby vehicle was hit. The 17-year-old, who later died, was seen on surveillance video hanging out with a group of people that included the alleged shooter before the incident, according to the affidavit obtained by News on Friday.

Police identified the alleged shooter as Terron Moore. He was taken into Dallas County custody and held Friday afternoon on $1 million bail, according to online jail records. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

At 3:10 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a call about shots fired in the 7400 block of Pineberry Road, near Sorcey Road, in The Woods area, according to a Friday morning news release. An occupant of a vehicle traveling on the highway called 911 after at least two gunmen standing on the street with a group of people began shooting at the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

No one in the vehicle was injured by gunfire, police said. However, one of the people who was with the group earlier, whom police identified as Christopher Wells, was shot, according to the affidavit.

Members of the group took Wells to a nearby emergency room, according to the affidavit. Once at the emergency room, two people exited the vehicle with Wells before the driver drove away with the vehicle.

The two people, including one identified by authorities as Moore, were later detained by police, according to the affidavit. Police did not identify the other person.

Wells was pronounced dead at the TotalCare emergency room in Cedar Hill at 3:50 a.m., according to online records from the Dallas County medical examiner.

Police took Moore to Dallas police headquarters, where he agreed to an interview without an attorney present, according to the affidavit. He told police he began shooting at the vehicle on Pineberry Road because the group of people thought the vehicle was someone they knew and had an “ongoing feud with,” according to the affidavit.

Moore feared the people in the vehicle were preparing to carry out a shooting at the group, according to the affidavit.

The vehicle used to transport Wells was later recovered by police. An inspection revealed what police described as multiple bullet holes in the vehicle, including near the back seat, where Moore said Wells was sitting at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video reviewed by police shows Moore shooting in the direction of the back seat of the vehicle. Moore identified himself in the video when police showed him the images, according to the affidavit.
