Conway is yet to sign a new contract at Ashton Gate, and with just 12 months left on his current deal, the South West club have decided to listen to offers.
Bristol City will be entitled to compensation if the striker leaves the club on a free transfer in 2025, but it will be nowhere near the amount they could demand during the next transfer window, especially if he goes north of the border, as they will do it. he will only get around £300k.
The 21-year-old could further increase his stock over the coming weeks after being selected for Scotland’s squad for Euro 2024. He was called up after Scotland suffered injuries to QPR striker Lyndon Dykes and Liverpool youngster Ben Doak, and nearly scored the winning goal on his debut in the closing stages of a 2-2 draw against Finland.
City of Bristol open to bids for Conway
Conway has played 82 times in the Championship for Bristol City, scoring 20 goals and providing five assists. He signed a new three-year contract with the club in July 2022.
He starred in the Robins’ FA Cup third round win over Premier League side West Ham United this season. The striker scored the equalizing goal at the London Stadium to force a replay at Ashton Gate, where he scored in a 1-0 win to send his team through to the next round.
Conway has been at Bristol City since he was seven, but manager Liam Manning admitted the striker would have to make a decision this summer if he did not accept the “excellent offer” the club made him.
Manning explained that he wanted Conway to stay, but now it appears the Robins are preparing for life without the Scottish striker.
City listening to offers for Conway suggests they have learned lessons from past seasons, when several players expired their contracts and left the club.
Bristol City have learned from their mistakes
It seems Bristol City have learned from their mistakes during previous transfer windows when they rejected offers from players only to see them end up leaving the club at the end of their contracts.
Han-Noah Massengo joined Burnley from Bristol City in September last year and the Robins only received a compensation package for the midfielder. Bristol City could have sold Massengo on a couple of occasions before he finally left on his own terms.
Bristol City signed Tomas Kalas from Chelsea for a club-record fee of £8m in the summer of 2019. The defender eventually left Ashton Gate to join Schalke on a free transfer in 2023, meaning the Robins did not receive no financial return on your investment.
The Robins brought Famara Diedhiou to the club from Angers for a club-record fee of £5.3m in 2017. Bristol City put a price tag of £2m on the striker with just six months left on his contract amid interest from Middlesbrough in 2021 before. He was eventually released by the club at the end of that season.
It seems Bristol City are determined not to make the same mistake again and will not lose Conway cheaply when his contract expires next summer.
