Meghan Markle’s first five months as a royal have certainly been busy.
Since her wedding to Prince Harry in May, the Duchess of Sussex has completed her first solo engagement as a royal, embarked on her first international royal tour and announced that she is pregnant with her first child.
But before all that, Meghan began her royal duties a month after her marriage as Queen Elizabeth II’s companion on an official visit to Cheshire, England.
While the pair looked as daft as thieves during their appearance, there was one mistake the 37-year-old made that apparently “baffled” the Queen.
New royal biography
In an extract from royal biographer Robert Jobson’s new book, Charles at 70: thoughts, hopes and dreamsIt is revealed that Meghan unknowingly did not follow royal protocol requiring her to wear a hat.
The queen’s aides had instructed the duchess that she would wear a green hat, the extract published by the daily mail details.
Meghan, however, was unaware that as a result of that decision, she was also expected to wear a hat, as she was “still new to the intricacies of palace protocol.”
This move left Her Majesty “a little bewildered.”
“I don’t think the duchess fully understood,” a senior figure reportedly close to the queen says in the book. “This was not a request. “It is others who must do them, not the Queen.”
Jobson notes in the biography that the duchess’s mistake and “lack of respect” in not wearing a hat was “duly noted” by the monarch’s senior officials. But it seems more like a personal mistake on her part than anything else.
Meghan Markle’s first appearance with the Queen
Despite this mishap, the Queen and Meghan appeared to be best friends during the appearance in June.
So much so that the internet totally fell in love with the dynamic duo.
You better believe you’ve never seen the Queen smile like that before!
We tried to tell you! We told you! The Queen’s favorite is Meghan but NOOOOO! You didn’t believe it!

But let’s not have favorites here, same thing. The courtesy was also extended to Kate Middleton about a year after her 2011 wedding to Prince William.
