We are less than seven months away from the latest Spidey-verse spin-off, Kraven the hunter. Sony has not yet released the full synopsis for the upcoming film, but the general basis of the film is that Sergei Kravinoff is on a mission to prove that he is the best hunter in the world. The trailer of the Directed by Aaron-Taylor Johnson The movie just came out and well… it was certainly interesting.
Sony has been on a mission to expand the Spideyverse from as far away as spider man 3. They have managed to capture success from the Poison The Miles Morales spin-offs and animated films have helped boost the brand overall. However, the most important thing is that Sony’s attempts have been more successful than failed. morbium and lady web are the most obvious failures of the company’s latest experiment in focusing on Spider-Man’s main villains in the comics.
Given the films Sony has made so far, it’s obvious what mistakes the company needs to avoid. Kraven the hunter It could be a great spin-off movie if done right. The character has a rich history in the comics and doesn’t necessarily have to rely on Spider-Man to actually exist.
Kraven can’t be an antihero
According to the trailers, Kraven appears as an antihero. This is easily the biggest problem with spin-offs like Poison and morbium. Sony continues to show these villains as anti-heroes with no relation to Spider-Man. Venom NEEDS Spider-Man. That’s basically how he became the villain character. Although that franchise is doing very well financially, it really fails to capture the strong character of the comics.
The same goes for Morbius. Without Spider-Man, he’s just a vampire. There is nothing wrong with changing the origin story. In fact, there are compelling ways these characters could have worked outside of Spider-Man canon. The problem remains that Sony is creating these villains as anti-heroes with no real purpose.
Movies like The Godfather, A Clockwork Orangeand even jester They have highlighted that it is possible to tell a story where the characters are the villains. The important thing about this is that we understand them. Sony seems to be too afraid to bank on these characters being bad. Kraven has an obsession with hunting. It is very well documented how dangerous it is. He is not a man with an honorable sense of morality.
That’s where the focus should be. His upbringing with his father, a crime boss, and how she acquired his obsession with hunting. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case in the trailers. However, trailers can deliberately mislead the public.
His purpose in the world of Spider-Man
These worlds are supposed to be connected to Spider-Man, yet they all feel separate because Tom Holland He has not appeared in any of the spin-offs. This is the most important reason why Poison and morbium Feel useless because there is no end goal for these characters within the confines of the Spidey universe.
Andrew Garfield and Tobey McGuire they still exist as the characters’ previous incarnations. Why not take advantage of this and include them in one of these spin-offs? Kraven the Hunter’s purpose is to hunt down and kill Spider-Man. He completely consumes his life and exhausts him every time he fails in his mission. That is the great complexity and nuances of the character that made him an iconic figure.
Sony needs to figure out why audiences should care about this future Spider-Man villain. They can’t capitalize on Spider-Man’s story and not give viewers a reason why they should continue shelling out money for these spin-offs that don’t really have many ties to the main Spider-Man.
Cheesy superpowers
Another problem with the trailer: Kraven the Hunter has superpowers. In the comics, Kraven is a normal human being. However, with the help of various herbs and potions, he gains incredible strength and power. Unfortunately, Sony already gave him superpowers. Hopefully, he doesn’t seem cheesy. There is a way to reverse the mythology of him that makes him a more intriguing character. There is potential for Kraven the hunter to be a good genuine surprise that these Spidey spin-offs desperately need. Sony just needs to embrace what made Kraven such an iconic villain in the comics.
