Norris justifies self-analysis after ‘rookie mistake’

Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, Lando Norris has expressed doubts about McLaren’s ability to win the Austrian Grand Prix sprint race. However, he admitted his own mistake in leaving the door open cost him the chance to prove whether victory was within his grasp.

Norris executed an impressive late braking maneuver on Max Verstappen at Turn 3, positioning his car perfectly to hinder Verstappen’s exit. This allowed Norris to get ahead on the straight. At first, it appeared that he had successfully completed the overtake, as Verstappen would find it extremely difficult to regain the lead on the outside of Turn 4, especially without the help of DRS.

However, to everyone’s surprise, Norris returned to the racing line approaching Turn 4, giving Verstappen enough room to get around the inside and regain first position. This error not only allowed Verstappen to regain the lead, but also allowed Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri to overtake him. Sensibly, Norris went around the inside at Turn 6 to avoid a collision.

On lap six, Norris had a golden opportunity to take the lead and successfully executed the difficult part of the maneuver. Unfortunately, a basic error in his driving prevented him from exploiting his advantage. Norris recognized his mistake and described it as having left the door open like an amateur.

Criticism of Norris, both self-inflicted and coming from outside sources, has sometimes been exaggerated in the past. He often chose not to engage in pointless battles with drivers of faster cars to protect his own results. However, now that McLaren has the speed to fight for wins, Norris has shown his willingness to fight. However, this particular mistake was a big mistake.

Norris completed the overtaking manoeuvre flawlessly and it was a brilliantly executed move. Had he not given Verstappen the chance to regain the lead, there was every chance he would have held on to first place. Instead, he had to settle for third.

One of Norris’ strengths is his ability to be self-critical, and it’s encouraging that he immediately recognized his rookie mistake. During the post-sprint press conference, he acknowledged the areas in which he needs to improve to consistently outperform Verstappen.

Norris admitted there is still room for improvement as a racing driver but refused to use this as an excuse for his performance. He stressed that the crucial moment was Turn 4 and that if he had defended his position and not left the door open the result would have been different. He acknowledged that opportunities were missed and mistakes were made which he now realises were foolish. However, he said he is giving his best on the track and is not too concerned about outside opinions. He is aware of his shortcomings and is committed to improving.

It is only natural for Norris to focus on the minor negative aspects of his and McLaren’s performance, as this period of constant struggle at the front will only enhance his already impressive abilities. This mistake serves as a valuable lesson for him to learn if he is to fulfil his immense potential and become a future world champion. After all, in a tight championship battle, these kinds of mistakes can result in a significant points gap against Norris in a points race.

The positive news for Norris is that he is a quick learner and will have the opportunity to apply his new knowledge at Sunday’s Grand Prix.
