“I’ve been using it at home to crush red peppers, crack nuts and hammer cloves,” Qin said in a video.
He recently discovered that the object he had been using as a hammer was actually a grenade when workers were demolishing his former home.
The authorities were immediately informed of the device and a bomb disposal team was dispatched to the scene.
The handle of the grenade had become smooth and shiny from years of use. The head of the grenade had significant pits from constant hammering.
Professionals were called in to destroy the grenade.
“If you find any suspicious object that looks like a hand grenade, you must report it to the police immediately. Do not touch it or use it as a hammer – the consequences could be disastrous!” authorities told the newspaper. The South China Morning Post.
Internet users surprised
The incident left netizens shocked. One user said: “The fact that it didn’t explode is just an exceptional case.” Another wrote: “It’s impressive that Grandma Qin used the hand grenade as a hammer for over 20 years without even taking out the fuse out of curiosity. If it were me, I wouldn’t have resisted my desire to take it out and see what would happen.”
