Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has criticised a Crystal Palace star for his performance for England against Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.
After reaching the final of the European Championship in Berlin, Gareth Southgate’s England fell at the final hurdle against Luis Del La Fuente’s Spain.
Southgate’s time as Three Lions manager has come to an end with the former Middlesbrough boss saying Sunday’s game against Spain was his last as England manager.
Cole Palmer had given England hope in the final but a late Mikel Oyarzabal goal meant Spain won the tournament and the Three Lions, as in 2021, finished second.
Phil Thompson criticises Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi
Throughout the tournament, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been one of the key figures for the Three Lions throughout the tournament.
With Manchester United’s Harry Maguire not in the final 26-man squad for the tournament in Germany, Guehi and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa were impressive.
Former Chelsea defender Guehi has been praised for his performances in Germany and former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce described him as “absolutely fantastic”.
It was a difficult final for the English defender, as the Spanish wingers in particular caused huge problems for the defence, with Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal standing out.
MORE STORIES FROM CRYSTAL PALACE
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Liverpool star Phil Thompson was unimpressed with the defender following the final in Berlin.
“I think Marc Guehi made some big mistakes on a few occasions,” Thompson said. “I look at centre-backs and they don’t have that luxury. On a couple of occasions I thought he had to win the ball back and he didn’t.”
Guehi is very interested in the Premier League
Despite making ‘a couple of big mistakes’ in the final, Guehi has seriously impressed throughout the international tournament.
HITC has been told that Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the teams interested in the defender.
However, Palace are understood to want around £60million for the defender amid strong interest from across England this summer.
