Actress and content creator Kusha Kapila is currently making headlines for her recent appearance on YouTube’s Roast Show, in which comedians like Samay Raina, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Shreya Priyam Roy and Gurleen Pannu cracked jokes on her, including some about her recent divorce with Zohrawar Singh Ahluwalia.
Meanwhile, the actress, who is facing backlash and concerns from her female and queer fans, has clarified her position on her involvement in the ridicule.
According to the latest Hindustan Times report, the statement explained that the action had been carried out in good faith and by a friend. It clarified that neither the comedians nor the guests had received any money, which rendered unfounded the claim that “people were paid large cheques to listen to their abuse”.
She added: “I had no idea what I was in for. Maybe I should have asked for a script and known better, but because there were friends involved, I didn’t.”
The actress added: “While I endured some really harsh jokes in front of a live audience and technicians, I was not at all okay with it being played out for millions of people as some jokes completely dehumanised me. It was shockingly cruel.”
The statement further conveyed that during the past six months of negotiations, she had been told that she deserved these jokes and that as a divorced woman, she should have seen this deal coming. She reflected that perhaps she should have and acknowledged that her silence on the issue could be seen as cowardice. However, she clarified that her choice was primarily due to opting for peace rather than engaging in endless discourse that would likely defame women.
Kusha mentioned that he won’t participate in another roast until he knows what to expect. He stated that although this was technically the third roast of his career and the previous two had been wonderful experiences, he won’t sit down to participate in one again without being fully aware of what could happen. He added that this roast would have been a good experience if all parties involved had known what to expect.
Kusha concluded her statement by emphasizing that everyone has their own limits, which are valid and should be respected. She acknowledged that while she participated in the roast, she did not agree with everything that came out of it. The actress expressed pride in the fact that she did not back out and despite the challenges she faced, she found the courage to continue acting.
