Napoli director Mauro Moliso has admitted the club made a mistake by not selling Victor Osimhen last summer.
After helping the Naples-based club end their 33-year wait for the Scudetto and being named Serie A’s Best Forward, the Super Eagles striker was one of the most coveted properties on the market.
Chelsea, who had had a terrible season in front of goal, courted him heavily but the Blues could not afford to sign Senegal international Nicolas Jackson.
Manchester United were also said to be interested in him, but the price they paid for him was too high before the club settled on Rasmus Højlund.
There was also a huge offer from Al-Ahli that could have made the Nigerian striker the most expensive African player in history, although he was the player who turned down a move to the Saudi Arabian Professional League side.
Recalling what happened last summer, Moliso claimed that Napoli made a mistake in not getting rid of the 25-year-old.
“We made some mistakes in managing Osimhen. I arrived in Naples in mid-July and I knew there was a very high offer from one of the biggest teams in Europe. In retrospect, we are all doing well, but maybe we could have sold him,” he told Sportitalia via Corriere dello Sport.
Napoli are finding it difficult to part ways with the Nigerian international, with his €130m valuation too prohibitive for the European heavyweights.
PSG are still in the race to sign him, but the Neapolitans will have to reduce the price of the star striker to close the deal.
