OPENAI co-founder Sam Altman has dropped hints about an updated version of ChatGPT, promising a “significant leap forward.”

Altman appeared at the Aspen Ideas Festival last week, where he previewed the company’s upcoming language model, aptly named GPT-5.
“I hope it’s a breakthrough,” Altman said.
“A lot of the things that GPT-4 does wrong, you know, it can’t do much in terms of reasoning, sometimes it just goes totally off the rails and makes a silly mistake, that even a six-year-old would never make.”
Users have reported complaints of this type, including persistent network errors, responses with nonsensical instructions, and problems submitting math tests.
Altman himself acknowledged that there is still much work to be done.
“We don’t know yet. We are optimistic, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he said.
OpenAI’s CEO had already mentioned GPT-5 in an interview with Bill Gates in January 2024, but did not provide a timeline for its launch.
Industry experts anticipate that technology to launch in mid-2024, possibly as early as this summer.

Despite attracting a loyal fan base, OpenAI has come under fire in recent years over allegations of copyright infringement.
