A simple mistake made by 150,000 drivers every year could leave you with a £5,000 bill

Drivers are being warned to be careful to avoid a simple but costly mistake that could mean a repair bill of thousands of pounds. The error is called “misfuelling” – when drivers inadvertently put the wrong type of fuel in their vehicle.

According to the RAC, around 150,000 UK drivers make the mistake every year. The AA has also said the mistake can lead to significant engine damage, with replacement parts from some manufacturers costing more than £5,000.

Even filling up with the wrong fuel can prove costly for drivers. Tom Banks, from Go Compare, told The Sun: “It can be an easier mistake to make than you think. If you’ve recently changed cars, are borrowing someone else’s vehicle or simply have a lot on your mind when you’re at the petrol station, you could soon find yourself facing a costly repair bill.”

Drivers are advised to check their insurance policies carefully as some may cover incorrect refuelling during breakdown assistance. This could happen even if it is not clearly stated.

Signs that you have misfuelled vary depending on whether you have put petrol in a diesel car or the other way around. When petrol has been put in a diesel car, this can include excessive exhaust smoke and sluggish acceleration. The check engine light may come on or the engine may stop running, Birmingham Live reports.

However, if diesel has been added to a gasoline vehicle, the engine may misfire or stall along with a large amount of exhaust smoke. It is usually more difficult to accidentally fill a gasoline vehicle with diesel because the diesel fuel nozzle at a gas station is larger.

If you realize your mistake while at the gas station, it is advisable not to walk away. Instead, put the vehicle in neutral and seek assistance to move it to a safe location before calling a professional.
